The purpose of this report is to secure specific and detailed conclusions from which definite recommendations can be made, wherever necessary, to effect revision of or additions to, existing doctrine and technique in the attack of a fortified locality; or to recommend a new doctrine or technique where none now exists. The ultimate objective is the formulation of a flexible procedure and guide in the proper usage of combined arms that may be successfully employed by a commander whose mission is to effect a breach of a permanent fortified area such as the German West Wall (Siegfried Line). The scope of this study is to be sufficiently extensive to allow full consideration of all available data, current developments, technique, weapons, organizations, tests, etc., specifically applying to a direct assault of a typical section of the German West Wall.
