In this October 2014 interview, MAJ Michael Gray, US Army, Logistics; discusses his deployment to Afghanistan as a company commander for 501st Infantry (IN) Regiment and a battalion logistics officer (S4) for 15-02 in 2010 through 2011. MAJ Gray talks about pre-deployment training and his missions of bringing in supplies from Kandahar to the FOB, as well as working with the local populace, including the Afghan Local Police (ALP). He discusses some difficult logistical challenges he faced and shares how morale was for his Soldiers. He shares a specific memory of the first day of casualties in his company and discusses the handoff to the incoming brigade. MAJ Gray closes his interview by stating, "I think that one of the things that the Army as a whole fails to do is give good understanding of all the branches to all the branches. We may know that the Chemical Corps does their chemical stuff, but we don't know exactly how they do it. I'm not saying you have to be an expert on it, but, if you know more than just -- it's Chemical, so they do chemical stuff -- then you can better plan for them in the absence of that subject matter expert."
