In this September 2014 interview, MAJ Adam Greene, US Army, Armor, discusses his deployment to Iraq as a motorized reconnaissance troop commander for 3-73 Calvary, 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 82d Airborne Division in 2009 through 2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). MAJ Greene talks about his mission manning a border checkpoint and conducting reconnaissance of the border. He describes how he came to the troop only six months before deployment and talks about living conditions at the checkpoint. He discusses some challenges he faced and shares issues with morale for his Soldiers. He also discusses the handoff to the incoming brigade. MAJ Greene closes his interview by stating, "The right answer of finding the balance between the -- us helping them figure out what's the right way ahead. Some people may look at some of the things we were doing and saying that it wasn’t necessarily helping or it was only a short term fix on a much bigger problem. I would think definately probably look objective there -- that's a lesson learned. Try to -- make sure you look objectively at the situation and not put your own emotions into the problem, because once you put the emotion -- once it becomes a personal emotion-driven event then it may not necessarily be the best -- it may not be the wrong thing, but it may not be the best thing to accomplish."
