In this June 2014 interview, 1SG (Ret.) Hans Hull, US Army, Armor, discusses his deployment to Iraq as a first sergeant for Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division in 2005 through 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). 1SG Hull talks about his missions of making sure the company commander had a company to fight by looking after the health and welfare, individual training, safety, and sanitation of the Soldiers. He describes how he rotated with his commanding officer to the outposts and talks about the make-up of the unit. He discusses the area of operations and shares the morale of his Soldiers. He shares some specific memories of losing people in the unit and discusses the handoff to the incoming brigade. 1SG Hull closes his interview by stating, "As a leader, making sure that Soldiers are doing the right thing, whether it's checking on a weapon, whether it's making sure somebodies awake on their guard post, whether they're doing maintenance on their vehicle, whether they're making sure their Soldiers hydrated or maybe just calling home. Leaders checking on each other and checking on Soldiers, I think is really very important. That's something I'd have to add. That also includes the right arm checking on the leader. Like, I'd check on the CO to make sure he was squared. He wasn’t running down. He didn't have something that he couldn't handle, because, of course, the first sergeant and the CO have to be -- have a tight working relationship."
