In this October 2013 interview, MAJ James Crenshaw, US Army, Air Defense Artillery discusses his deployment to Iraq as a member of a Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) with 2d Brigade, 82d Airborne in 2011 through 2011 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)/Operation New Dawn (OND). MAJ Crenshaw talks about his mission advising, training, assisting the Iraqi Army. His secondary mission was the retrograde of equipment and closing down of a forward operating base (FOB). He describes his daily duties and talks about some of his key leader engagements. He discusses some challenges he faced and shares how nervous the Iraqis he dealt with were about the US leaving. He shares a specific memory of the dealing with the Iraqis and how well they got along. MAJ Crenshaw closes his interview by stating, "Leadership, learning leadership is perpetual. You don't stop learning about leadership and you can learn leadership from all sources -- bad and good, because I have. . . I think people choose to be toxic leaders, but you can also choose to be a toxic follower. What I mean by that is, you underwrite toxic leaders when you don't say anything. You underwrite toxic leaders by your lack of doing something you underwrite them."
