In this May 2013 interview, MAJ Jason Cody, US Army, Signal Corps, discusses his time as a rear detachment commander for the 63d Signal Battalion in 2007 through 2008 in support of the GWOT. MAJ Cody talks about his missions of providing support to his deployed unit and their families. He describes how the rear detachment was established and manned and talks about some equipment issues he dealt with. He discusses some difficult leadership challenges he faced and shares how he learned quickly that building relationships was one of the most important parts of his job. He shares how he utilized many garrison and community resources and discusses the battalions return. MAJ Cody closes his interview by stating, "The thing I would toss out to anybody that's going to be a rear detachment commander is recognize that piece. 'You're not a company grade leader at that level. You are absolutely an organizational leader. You have a big mission and you have to work with people you don't control.'"
