In this April 2013 interview, CPT Edmund Guy, US Army, Air Defense Artillery, discusses his deployment to Iraq as a battery commander for Alpha Company of 2-44 Air Defense Artillery in 2008 through 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). CPT Guy took command five months prior to his first deployment. He describes his pre-deployment training and discusses the leeway he had in training up his Soldiers and preparing to use new equipment in country. He describes his first few days in country, details a typical day as a commander, and shares a typical day for his Soldiers. He talks about the mentorship he received from his battalion commander, working with the Navy and Air Force, and describes his reintegration experience post-deployment. CPT Guy shares his deployment successes and he closes his interview by stating, "We have been practicing the mission command. We have been having to learn new ways to solve problems because the environment is changing with systems and the environment is changing with people. All these things are changing and we have to come up with new ways to construct a viable answer to that. . . But, how can we take that recent history and apply it to today, tomorrow, or five year, ten years from now?"
