In this March 2013 interview, BG John G. Ferrari discusses his deployment to Afghanistan as the deputy commander for programs in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). He talks about the day he met LTG Bill Caldwell and shares how LTG Caldwell asked him the day they met if he would like to join him in Afghanistan. He describes his first few days in country and talks about how he began to grow the training program shortly after he arrived. He describes the interaction he had with Coalition and Joint Forces and details the relationship the Coalition and Joint Forces had with the Afghanistan Police and Afghanistan Border Police. He shares a deployment memory, stating, "The memory that I have is how relentless it was day in and day out. It was just every day brought with it challenges, but every day brought people who rose to find interesting ways to solve the problems." BG Ferrari talks about why he volunteered to stay an additional six months in country and closes his interview by discussing the need to match skillsets to specific tasks. BG Ferrari states, "Once you had the right people with the right skillsets in [the right job] then they could go and fix things."
