In this interview, MAJ John Gwinn, US Army Field Artillery discusses his deployment to Iraq as a battery commander of Bravo Battery 1-321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment (AFAR) in 2009 through 2010 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). MAJ Gwinn talks about his duel maneuver and FA mission. He describes how he traveled all over his AO working COIN missions and living in some Spartan areas. He discusses his interactions with the Afghan soldiers and how culture played an important role in their success. He shares a specific memory of a Green-on-Blue shooting that happened at one of the COPs he was stationed at. MAJ Gwinn closes his interview by stating, "No matter what country we find ourselves in, we have to come into that fight, conflict, or whatever, with a clear understanding of their culture. An understanding of what impact our actions will have on their culture."
