In this November 2012 interview, MAJ Shannon Wolf, US Army, Field Artillery (FA); discusses his deployment to Afghanistan as a brigade fire support officer (FSO) for 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 10th Mountain Division in 2010 through 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). MAJ Wolf starts his interview off by detailing his background in the Army and talks about his first three Iraq deployments. He describes his pre-deployment training as he prepared for his deployment to Afghanistan and discusses the handoff his team received from an Army National Guard unit when they first arrived in Afghanistan. He describes his day-to-day missions and his interactions in working alongside the Afghan leaders. He compares his interaction with the Afghan leaders to his interactions on his previous deployments to Iraq and shares the cultural differences he noticed. He talks about the make-up of his fire support staff and describes how each one of his team members contributed to their deployment success. MAJ Wolf shares a specific memory of a meeting with the Afghan leaders in efforts to review a particular report and he closes his interview by stating, "There are lessons learned in Iraq that could be utilized in Afghanistan, but it may be a bit too late to implement them."
