MAJ Rebekah Lust served as the battalion personnel officer (S1) at Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq during 2007 through 2009 and as the brigade S1 at Contingency Operating Base (COB) Adder in Tallil, Iraq during 2010 and 2011, both in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In this January 2012 interview, MAJ Lust discusses the duties of the S1, the changes in responsibility between battalion and brigade, and the challenges she sometimes faced in different aspects of her job. MAJ Lust concludes her interview with the observation, "As the brigade S1 in the middle of the reset cycle and while getting ready for the training cycle, it was hard for me to catch up with the strength management piece and getting the personnel required. As we went through the year of the deployment and we worked with Human Resources Command (HRC) to start the personnel reset, which they do at your redeployment minus 180 with the briefings and figuring out what Soldiers will depart and what you'll need for replacements, it's my understanding that it prepared the unit better for the next reset. I just think that process will work if used properly."
