MAJ Brian Darilek served as the brigade logistics officer (S4), liaison officer (LNO) to Regional Command - North (RC-NORTH) headquarters and the division operations staff (G3) Aviation officer in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan during 2010 and 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). In this October 2011 interview, MAJ Darilek discusses the establishment of a ring route in RC-North, his transition to the G3 Aviation/LNO for the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) at RC-North headquarters, and the challenges of working with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces and explaining US policy and capabilities. MAJ Darilek concludes his interview with the observation, "It was the hardest, easiest deployment you could possibly have. When you look back at it, it was pretty easy but there were so many challenges we had to overcome for being a whole extra CAB that originally wasn't planned on being in Afghanistan. We had to build up all of that area."
