MAJ Jason Williams served as the battalion intelligence officer (S2) with the 101st Military Intelligence Battalion in Forward Operating Base (FOB) Gabe in Ba'qubah, in the Diyala Province, Iraq during 2004 and 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In this August 2011 interview, MAJ Williams discusses the duties of an S2, the difficulties of trying to identify the enemy during this early period, and his work with the local populace in these early stages before that practice was common. MAJ Williams concludes his interview with the observation, "The second lieutenants and lieutenants in the Army, it's beating them up and giving them as much information as possible. You never know when they're going to go or what's going to happen. . . I would have loved that as a lieutenant or a junior captain, to [be told], 'Hey, read all these books; you may never need to do know this, but read it anyway. It helps prepare you.'"
