In this March 2011 interview MAJ Phillip Lamb discusses his two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). MAJ Lamb spends some time describing the initial invasion into Iraq and his role in it as the petroleum, oil, and lubricants/ammunition III/V platoon leader in 1-3 Attack Aviation. MAJ Lamb discusses challenges he had, some interesting experiences, and major lessons learned for the Aviation community. After redeploying to the States and attending the Infantry Captain's Career Course MAJ Lamb moves to Germany and 6-6 CAV, which is now part of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB). While there MAJ Lamb held three different company commands and ultimately deployed as the Delta Company commander for a 15-month deployment to Iraq. MAJ Lamb compares and contrasts some interesting aspects of this deployment to his first deployment, discusses some major successes he had, and describes important lessons learned including the importance of maintaining appropriate boots on the ground (BOG) to dwell time. MAJ Lamb discusses the importance of pre-deployment training and in conclusion MAJ Lamb states that, "At a minimum six months prior to deployment you should have all the people and equipment you're going to deploy with at that time and not still get new people and new equipment in after that because then you're playing catch up for the whole deployment."
