MAJ Mark Barton served as the chief targeting officer at Combined Joint Task Force 76 (CJTF-76) at Bagram Airfield (BAF), Afghanistan during 2004 and 2005 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and as assistant operations officer (S3), then a battery commander with 3rd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery (FA) at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Warrior in Kirkuk, Iraq during 2006 and 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In this November 2010 interview, MAJ Barton discusses working in a joint environment in Afghanistan, his experiences working with Iraqis, and the challenges of keeping up morale when his unit was extended. Discussing his role as chief targeting officer, MAJ Barton observes, "You'd start seeing all the material that was captured and you realize that a lot of that stuff was from a targeting packet that you developed; they got a lot of information from you or your cell and they were able to use it to do an operation to either get a lot of material out of the hands of the insurgents or to actually capture someone and now that person is no longer a threat to the Afghan people or Coalition Forces. That was always a fun thing to see on the back end; when we got the assessments back from the unit that showed, 'This is what we were able to capture or do with your information.'"
