In this interview MAJ William Hogan discusses his deployment to Afghanistan as the operations officer (S3) for a provincial reconstruction team (PRT). MAJ Hogan discusses how the PRT came together at Camp Atterbury, Indiana prior to deployment and how fortunate they were to be able to gel so well during their pre-deployment training. MAJ Hogan describes the challenges his PRT faced in learning the interagency culture and Air Force culture and how they overcame these challenges to be an effective team. MAJ Hogan concludes his interview by stating a challenge in the COIN environment; "I think the one challenge apart from the PRT was working with the locals like you do in COIN. You have to be side by side with them; you can't turn your back to them. They may be trustworthy but every now and then some person with bad intentions can slip through."
