MAJ Jimmy Smith served as a tank company commander with 3-15 Infantry in Sadr City, Iraq and with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop (HHT), 3-7 CAV at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Rustamiyah during 2004 and 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In this October 2010 interview, MAJ Smith discusses the challenges of standing up a new tank company under modularity, the difficulty of conducting his mission with units at multiple locations, and the circumstances surrounding his change of command in August of 2005. MAJ Smith concludes his interview with the observation, "The Army prides itself on doing the sexy stuff: shooting, moving, communicating. But officers need to know how to think, plan and facilitate the execution, not just execute."
