MAJ Eric Saulsbury served as battery commander in Tikrit, Iraq during 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and as fire support officer (FSO) in Kandahar, Afghanistan during 2008 and 2009 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) In this October 2010 interview, MAJ Saulsbury discusses the convoy security operations mission of his deployment to Iraq, his responsibilities as an FSO during his deployment to Afghanistan, and his unit's 100 day deployment to Haiti to provide humanitarian assistance after the 2010 earthquake. MAJ Saulsbury concludes his interview with the observation, "Everything we do nowadays is all going to be joint and it's probably going to be multi-national. Learning how to work with different cultures [is important]. Even in Haiti we worked with UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) forces, Brazilians, and Sri Lankans. Everything we do is now multi-national; we'll never do anything independently as a US Force. Understanding the caveats, the way they operate, and the way we operate -- just having that common understanding that if you're not the lead then you understand your supporting role. You have to take the fact that you're in the supporting role and go with it. Of all the deployments I've had the multi-national and joint experience was the biggest thing that came out of all of them."
