MAJ Brian Heverly served on the air defense coordination (ADACOOR) with the 82nd Airborne Division in Baghdad, Iraq during 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In this March 2010 interview, MAJ Heverly discusses the frustrations of working air defense in an environment that didn't require it, how he kept up morale of Soldiers who weren't very busy, and the austere conditions during this early deployment. MAJ Heverly concludes his interview with the observation, "Shared misery builds camaraderie like no other thing I've seen in the Army. . . That builds respect, both up and down the chains of command. That gives you credibility with your Soldiers when you come back."
