MAJ Joe Kelly served as the executive officer (XO) and support operations officer (SPO) with the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) in Bagram, Afghanistan during 2009 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). In this June 2010 interview, MAJ Kelly discusses the importance of a well-organized logistics team, how he as a leader kept his Soldiers' morale up, and the challenges and benefits of working with an aviation support brigade (ASB). MAJ Kelly concludes his interview with the observation, "The cycle for assignments and the Army Force Generation (ARFORGEN) model, which we try to implement, doesn't work. For instance, why would you try to pull me out of a leadership position right before we deployed? I trained up with this team to fight but you don't want me to fight it because I met my two-year commitment in a branch qualifying key designated position. That doesn't make sense to me. You don't break up a team like that."
