MAJ Kyle Moulton served as the company executive officer (XO) of 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade and on a Provisional Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Kunduz, Afghanistan during 2002 and 2003 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and as a project manager, company commander and operations officer (S3) with 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division in western Baghdad and Kirkuk, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In this December 2009 interview, MAJ Moulton discusses the unusual change of not just his position but his unit designation part-way through his first deployment, the loss of one of his soldiers on his second deployment and how he worked to help his unit through that event, and the dividends that executing route clearance missions on earlier deployments paid when he transitioned into targeting and planning aspects of those types of missions. MAJ Moulton observes in concluding his interview that, " regardless of the country, dealing with the people in Afghanistan and the people in Iraq, I got to see that we're all basically the same. We want to have a healthy life. We want to raise our kids in a safe environment. We want to provide for them as best we can. As long as we can do that, we see that we have a future. Being able to communicate that to your soldier as a leader, that we oftentimes get focused on the enemy, and although that's important and they need to stay focused on that, sometimes it's important to take a step back and let them see why we're here, why it's important and that it's not all bad."
