MAJ John Hill served as the liaison officer (LNO) and military to military (mil to mil) planner with Alpha Company, 1-16 Infantry in Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Yemen during 2006 and 2007 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom - Horn of Africa (OEF-HOA). In the second of two February 2009 interviews, MAJ Hill discusses his role in mil to mil planning for the armed forces of Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Yemen, some of the challenges of working in a joint environment, and the tremendous sense of accomplishment he felt after this deployment. MAJ Hill observes of working at the operational and strategic level, "That was a world I'd never seen before and it was really an eye-opening experience. If you understand that level, you understand why you're doing what you're doing at the tactical level and how they put the pieces together."
