MAJ Jan Erik Haug served with the 1st Norwegian Contingent on the Operational Mentor and Leadership Team (OMLT) during 2006 and 2007 in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). In this April 2009 interview, MAJ Hauk discusses the complicated mission of the OMLT, his introduction and working relationship with his Afghan counterpart, and the challenges of working within his own and other coalition members' mandates and restrictions. MAJ Haug concludes his interview with the recommendation that the main effort should be focused on training the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), stating "As far as security operations are concerned, I think training the ANSF is the only way toward withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan as soon as possible."
