In the second of three interviews, MAJ Bill Dougherty discusses his first deployment to Iraq in February of 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. MAJ Dougherty talks about how his time at Camp New York was essential to the integration of his combat team, the challenges of dealing with ever-changing mission parameters, equipment problems, and when the realities of war hit. MAJ Dougherty also discusses the challenges of working with the local populace and maintaining proper security in Mosul when the first phase of the conflict was over. Finally, MAJ Dougherty discussed his duties as the Assistant Battalion S3 in Mosul and the challenges posed by IEDs, communication gaps handling reconstruction funds.
