Lieutenant Colonel Russell Godsil served as the intelligence officer for 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division in Baghdad, Iraq, from June 2003 through July 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In this interview, he talks about how the brigade's detainee holding area was run, the construction of the brigade holding area, the constant challenge of getting accurate reporting about the circumstances of each detainee capture, and the employment of stress positions and forced labor for uncooperative detainees. He also discusses detainee abuse at the behest of interrogators, the initial mentality associated with mass round-ups, and the criteria for capture. Godsil closes the interview by stating that their deployment was successful because the leadership established the right command climate.
