Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Elizabeth Rogers served as the operations officer for the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion at Camp Cropper, Iraq, from May 2003 through July 2004 in support of Operation Iraq Freedom. In this interview, she talks about interrogation priorities, the lack of detainee abuse throughout the battalion, problems with reporting requirements, and how standard responsibilities regarding detainees became mutated over the course of the deployment. She also discusses problems with intelligence dissemination early in the deployment, the employment of tactical human intelligence teams, the problem of detaining people for merely being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the review process to safeguard the innocent. She closes the interview by stating that you cannot go into a different culture and expect to win a counterinsurgency right away.
