In this first of two interviews, Major Anthony Nelson talks about serving as the operations officer on the intelligence staff for 3rd Infantry Division in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He discusses the readiness of the division to go to war, spending most of their predeployment preparation inspecting their equipment, the importance of the Spitfire radio to their functioning, and the constant struggle for adequate power. He also talks about working with unmanned aerial vehicles, interpreters, the organized redeployment of the division to the States, and the challenge of communications. Nelson closes the interview by stating that the intelligence systems should be streamlined and synchronized.
