Major Brad Johnson served as the intelligence officer for 1st Battalion, 13th Armor in Iraq from March through August 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In this email correspondence interview, he discusses American jurisdiction over Iraqis, the battalion's detainee holding area, and deciding who among the detainees to release or hold. He also talks about not applying pressure to the interrogators, making up for the lack of trained military intelligence personnel, and how most MI officers should not supervise interrogators because they don't have the requisite training. Johnson closes the interview by saying how unfortunate it was that the Army did not understand counterinsurgency in 2003.
