In this first of four interviews, Lieutenant Commander Ted Kleinberg talks about serving as the naval flight officer in a E-2 Hawkeye from VAW-124 onboard the USS Enterprise in the Arabian Sea from September through November 2001 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). He discusses being deployed in the Persian Gulf on September 11th, the initial Navy-only flavor of flight operations, the challenge of working with the NATO Airborne Warning and Control System, and the difficulty of mastering the communications plan. He also talks about personal friction amongst the flight crews, helping get close air support to teams on the ground, and the reception they got as the first warship home from OEF. He closes the interview by talking about the terrible bandwidth that the Enterprise had and how it affected both morale and operations.
