From January to July 2006, Major Beth Behn served as the terrain manager for the Victory Base Complex as part of the Directorate of Public Works in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She worked for the 17th Field Artillery Brigade, which was attached to the 4th Infantry Division (MND-Baghdad). Behn was serving as an instructor at West Point when she volunteered for this assignment. In January 2006, she reported to Fort Bliss to begin predeployment training and preparation. Behn flew into Kuwait before flying into Baghdad International Airport the following day. Behn was filling an empty slot once she arrived. As the terrain manager, Behn had to determine if specific requirements were met for military forces and non-military forces requesting to live on the base. If it was determined they met those requirements, it was Behn's job to find an appropriate location to assign to them and for what period of time. Most of her time was spent working with contractors and attending meetings. Behn also played a part in new construction projects. Behn worked with interpreters frequently because of the amount of contact she had with the local population. While she faced many challenges during her tour, she drew on the experiences of past assignments to assist her in completing her day-to-day tasks. Behn also offers her lesson learned and her recommendations based on this deployment.
