From February 2006 through January 2007 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan, Major Ira Smith served as the 10th Mountain Division's foreign disclosure officer. In this interview, he discusses his principal responsibility of "ensuring the visibility or disclosure of information coming out of CJTF-76 to release to our coalition partners and/or local Afghan officials." Smith also talks about additional liaison officer duties he had while stationed at Bagram, what his typical days consisted of, the biggest challenges he faced in the performance of his FDO work, the various different countries and US services he had interaction with, what he enjoyed most about being an FDO in Afghanistan, the impact of modularity on the division headquarters, his thoughts on warfighting in a coalition environment, as well as his most significant takeaways and recommendations for improvement. Smith closes his interview by saying that the training provided to military personnel on how to properly handle classified information needs to be taken a bit more seriously and that it should be emphasized throughout a servicemember's career.
