From March 2003 through March 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Major Ben Walters commanded the 41st Transportation Company, a palletized load system (PLS) unit out of the 18th Corps Support Battalion. In this interview, Walters discusses his company's movement to theater, the lack of predeployment training opportunities he had as a new commander, as well as the various missions they did all over Iraq, logging over one million miles all told, which included: the Red Ball Express from Kuwait to Camp Cedar I/II; Class V ammunition resupply to 3rd Infantry Division, the 101st Airborne Division and V Corps; and transportation support to 4th Infantry Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Walters also talks about the importance of intelligence gathering for transportation units, the problems caused by comms shortfalls, the performance of the PLS vehicles and the operation of his unit's family readiness group.
