From November 2001 through July 2002 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan, Major Kevin Lovell commanded Bravo Company, 92nd Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy), a position from which he planned, prepared and supervised construction of Camp Stronghold Freedom in Karshi-Kanabad, Uzbekistan, and later did the same for vertical and horizontal construction, area mine clearance and runway repair at Bagram, Afghanistan. In this interview, Lovell also discusses what it took for his combat heavy engineer unit to become the first such organization to "move 100 percent by air halfway around the world in three days notice"; the challenges posed by a lack of specific guidance and an at times uncertain chain of command; and his company's support of elements of every US service. A lesson reinforced during his tour, Lovell said, was that "US soldiers will go anyplace they're told to go, they will fight anyplace they're told to fight, and they will leave their families behind, just so long that they know their families are going to be taken care of." To wit, he discusses the company's family support apparatus and closes his interview by saying that he was fortunate to have worked for a great boss and with "the most fantastic soldiers in the Army."
