Major Tom McNew commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division in Kuwait and Iraq from December 2002 through August 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In this interview, he talks about the challenges of dealing with a brigade headquarters and all of its attached units, the added fuel capacity he had going into Iraq, a logistical tail stretched 200 kilometers from Tallil to Karbala, and the continual concern about having adequate communications equipment. He also discusses the impossibility of ordering parts while on the move, contact with the enemy as the headquarters moved through unsecured areas, the difficulties of moving huge convoys of vehicles with any efficiency, and the unrealized talents hidden amongst the soldiers. McNew, a tanker, closes the interview by expressing his disgust at going to war in a Humvee.
