Major John Ferrell commanded Headquarters Troop, 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry in Kuwait and Iraq in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In this interview, he talks about the deployment of his squadron from Germany to Kuwait, the relationship between himself and his squadron executive officer, and the series of corps-level exercises they had conducted in Germany and Poland as preparation for operations in Iraq. He also discusses the training they conducted in Kuwait, the big dividends paid by that training once combat began, and their actions around Nasiriyah. Ferrell closes the interview by stating that having a commander from one of the combat arms in charge of support units gives them the needed combat focus.
