In this second of two interviews, Major Jason Curl discusses his command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment around Fallujah, Iraq, from August 2003 through April 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He talks about the unit's attitude towards their short-notice deployment, the difficult convoy they took north into Iraq, his role as commander of the quick reaction force, and the differences from American personalities and the local culture. He also discusses the challenges of working with the new Iraqi Civil Defense Corps, the attitude they had towards every mission, and a worst-case incident they had with a CNN news crew. Curl closes the interview by emphasizing the importance of not allowing yourself to operate in a fixed pattern.
