From November 2002 through June 2003 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan, Major Tom Sager commanded the 82nd Airborne Division's Long Range Surveillance Detachment (LRSD) - the first LRSD to deploy in the Global War on Terrorism. In this interview, he discusses the conduct of reconnaissance/surveillance missions for Kandahar Airfield, for 1st Brigade of the 82nd, and for 3rd and 7th Special Forces Groups all over the country of Afghanistan. He also talks about how best (and what it takes) to employ LRSDs in combat zones, the concept of risk assumption when doing so, as well as how they differ from Special Forces A-teams on the one hand and conventional scouts on the other.
