In January 2002, Major Charmaine Betty-Singleton deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the command judge advocate for the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade. Based at Camp Doha in Kuwait for most of her tour, she did, however, make trips to both Kandahar and Bagram from time to time. In this interview, she discusses the variety of legal issues that arose and which required her attention until she redeployed in July. Betty-Singleton cites protection status and categorization of detainees as among the most significant issues, as well as communication of the rules of engagement. The fact that her brigade was so widely dispersed presented an additional challenge. In closing, she says that efforts must be made to better understand the sacrifices being made by Reserve Component soldiers and counts her work on this deployment "outside the JAG family" in the military intelligence brigade as being especially enriching to her professionally.
