Having just finished up a company command and, at the time, serving as the S23 in the 710th Main Support Battalion at Fort Drum, New York, Major Lance Cangelosi was alerted for near-immediate service post 9/11 at Army Forces Central Command (ARCENT) headquarters at Camp Doha, Kuwait. Arriving in December 2001 as an individual augmentee, he assumed duties as part of the ammunition team in the logistics (C4/G4) section and concerned himself principally with theater ammunition supply for Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan. Cangelosi listed an undefined command structure as among the most pressing challenges at this early stage in the Global War on Terrorism, as well as the unique situation that existed whereby his C4 was doing a number of things (such as actually giving orders) that a theater support command would normally do in terms of execution. He also talks about his role in Operation Anaconda. In addition, Cangelosi describes a non-OEF-related joint exercise he participated in with the Kuwaiti Army, during which he acted as a liaison officer to a Kuwaiti logistics cell. In terms of recommendations he has to Big Army, Cangelosi cites first and foremost that deploying units as units is far preferable to deploying individuals and comes with far less negative consequences. He returned from Kuwait in June 2002.
