In this first of three interviews, Major David Motes talks about his service as the supply and services officer for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 561st Corps Support Battalion at Camp Snoopy, Doha, Qatar, from January through August 2002 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. When the battalion deployed to Qatar, it was heavily task organized and included maintenance, petroleum, shower and laundry, satellite nodal, medical, quartermaster and Air Force units not organic to the battalion. The battalion and the Air Force deployed there with different missions and different chains of command, but they very quickly integrated their operations together, later including the Canadian Princess Patricia's Light Infantry when they arrived. The only real concern they had when moving officers between the United States, Qatar and Pakistan was that the paperwork for property accountability couldn't keep up with the personnel movements. Motes moved forward to Pakistan, describing the close coordination between the American and Pakistani officers at all levels. He closes his interview by saying that units should take every opportunity to train while deployed.
