In this third of four interviews covering his Global War on Terrorism deployments, Major James Love discusses his redeployment to Afghanistan as a civil affairs team leader in Echo Company, 96th Civil Affairs Battalion in 2005 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He explains how their mission was to support a Special Forces task force in northeastern Afghanistan, how communications and money were easier to come by than in his previous deployment, and how his past experience dealing with Special Forces operational detachment alphas proved invaluable. Love states that his biggest challenge involved working with the commander of the provincial reconstruction team. He closes this interview by noting that the joint experience has a steep learning curve, that the theater is relatively mature for assets like interpreters, and that this experience served to reinforce everything he had learned in his first deployment to Afghanistan.
