Major William Tomlin served on a border transition team for two Iraqi battalions in the Rabia area from March 2006 through March 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In this interview, Tomlin talks about how the training received at Fort Hood was not geared towards active duty soldiers while that received at the Phoenix Academy was helpful; how the Iraqi battalions were composed and what they would not do for training; and how smuggling, insurgency and the soldiers' incomes were all tied together. He closes his interview by saying that more support needs to be forthcoming from the various branches of the United States government, especially when the military is called on to perform a non-military mission.
