A veteran of two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom - the first from February to June 2003 and the second from February to May 2005 - US Marine Corps Major Carlos Urbina, during his initial rotation, served as a communications company commander in the 2nd Force Service Support Group's headquarters battalion. Then in 2005, he went as the assistant chief of staff G6, again for 2nd FSSG. In this interview, Urbina discusses the 2nd FSSG mission in great detail, basically "to facilitate logistical support for the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. In our case," he explained, "we were primarily responsible for running the Port of Kuwait and the Kuwaiti Naval Base, which enabled the offloading of ships, to include the black bottoms that were moving our own gear as well as the gear of everyone else within the MAGTAF. Plus, we were also tasked with offloading the maritime pre-positioning ships that were offloaded to support the entire ground combat element." Reference his first deployment, Urbina also discusses how his company - which consisted of a headquarters section, a radio platoon, a multi-channel platoon, a wire platoon and a data platoon - was task organized. Describing his role in the G6, Urbina talks about coordinating command, control, communications and computers for the group commander, running the networks and doing operational planning.
