From February to June 2004, U.S. Air Force Major Patrick Kennerly was based in Kirkuk, Iraq, and served as the 506th Air Expeditionary Group's Logistics Readiness Squadron commander. In this capacity, he was responsible for Air Force logistics at Kirkuk Airbase, including the aerial port that received all the planes, passengers and cargo. He also oversaw vehicle operations, traffic management, a maintenance section, all cargo in-processing, the deployment and redeployment of Air Force units, the fueling of F-16 fighters flying close air support missions over Iraq, and general base support and terminal operations - basically tasked with running an airport. In addition to discussing these duties, Kennerly also talks about some of the "male-female relationship" problems he had to occasionally deal with, problems that were made more difficult considering certain units and other government agencies living on the same airbase were not interested, as he put it, in "helping us maintain discipline.”
