Prior to the events of September 11, 2001, leaders of the United States chose the moral high ground during the times of war. They established and followed international laws on humanitarian treatment by ensuring person(s) who committed war crimes received trials to prove their innocence. They further denounced other Countries whose actions involved inhumane treatment. After September 11th, leaders of the United States started using Unmanned Aircraft Systems to use as lethal force against individual targets. From 2004 to April 2011 over 20 percent of the deaths were innocent people in Allied Countries. The other 2,000 were "suspected" war criminals that were not given their right to a trial. The United States lowered their standards on their lethal targets list to person(s) they cannot even verify. The use of the drones saves Soldiers' lives and is less expensive on the military. However, using them in lieu of a fair trial is extrajudicial execution. Targeting individuals to kill without request of the host nation or in self-defense is an assassination. Taking the lives of innocent civilians in an Allied Country is murder. The drones are causing ethical dilemmas that need to be addressed. If not, the United States will receive the repercussions of their decisions and actions.
