Religious and spiritual observation within the unique military environment are essential for the development of service members' desire to serve and fight the nations wars. The chaplaincy provides programs, services, guidance, and facilities to establish an environment where service members feel free to explore and express their spiritual beliefs. The profession of arms differs from other government professions where spiritual or religious openness is strictly prohibited. While American society seeks greater separation between church and state, the armed forces places greater emphasis on the role of spirituality and religious observation within its ranks. This emphasis helps in the development of the time honored values characteristic of military service and acts as a force multiplier in the individual service members' will to fight and win in battle.
