There are several ways to collect intelligence on an enemy's capabilities, but determining the enemy's intentions is extremely difficult. To recognize one intelligence discipline or skill-set, i.e. signals intelligence (SIGINT) vs. counterintelligence (CI) over another in an attempt to determine the enemy's intention would defeat the process of combining all intelligence disciplines to produce actionable intelligence. During OPERATION Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and OPERATION Enduring Freedom (OEF) a new emphasis and goal was placed on all intelligence disciplines, SIGINT, CI, human intelligence (HUMINT), imagery intelligence (IMINT), and measurements and signals intelligence (MASINT) to penetrate an enemy organization to ascertain the enemy's capabilities and intentions to produce actionable intelligence. However, as in the case of all Army career management fields (CMF) there is a need to rain superior against all other military occupational specialties within your field. This degree of superiority also holds true in the military intelligence (MI) community as MI disciplines often compete for bragging rights instead of working together to produce a relevant intelligence product. Nevertheless, one intelligence discipline, regardless of era of conflict, must be coordinated with other intelligent disciplines to be truly effective in order to gain actionable intelligence.
