Why do we need to study history as professional military leaders? In this essay I will explain the importance of military professionals studying history. Given the face pace of our military in combat during the last nine years, coupled with the need to grow all while transforming to a modular force. The Army's Non-Commissioned Officer Education System (NCOES) is back logged and the need for junior leaders on the battlefield should be a well enough support for us to look back a few years and see what our predecessors did when they faced dilemmas such as what the Army faces today. Another issue explained in the essay will be on how we as leaders studying history will be able to reel in those ambitious leaders of today that are full of arrogance and that failed to properly reflect on history and grasp the lessons learned. We as military leaders must study history or we will fail and repeat the same mistakes as our military ancestors. Though we are the most intelligent fighting force in the world we must still study history in order to learn from the trials and tribulations of those that came before us or we as a nation are destined to repeat those same mistakes.
