My personal experience paper is going to look at deployment from a different perspective that most deployments do not often address or refer to. This is the mission and experiences of being a First sergeant for a rear detachment of a forward deployed infantry battalion. I will endeavor to demonstrate some of the issues and situations which made this tour memorable as well as those which made it challenging and lead to lessons learned for future rear detachment personnel in the State. I will explain what I believe to be the necessary personnel a Unit needs to assign as rear detachment Soldiers and the necessary functions as applies to a National Guard Unit or Battalion.
