Throughout the history of warfare soldiers wrote an untold number of books about their experiences in combat. Very few people drew about those experiences. Bill Mauldin was one of those few who not only put into pictures what people tried to do with words, but did it better than anyone else. Civilians consider war heroes to be the ones who attack the enemy machine gun position, who drag a buddy out of the line of fire, who fight to the last bullet. To the soldiers fighting, their heroes are the ones who tell their stories to those who don't know what it's like in combat, the ones who voice their frustrations and fears for them. Bill was one of those who did that with his drawings, and to them he was a hero.
